Work the Room.

How to make your next career or networking event actually worth your time.

You can attend an event, listen to every speaker, take a few pictures, collect some contacts and still leave without having a single conversation that really matters.

That’s because being in the room is not the same as making use of it.

Whether you’re attending networking or talent conference, career fair, masterclass or industry meetup, there is usually much more to gain than what happens on stage. There are people to meet, companies to learn about, questions you can ask, opportunities you may not have considered and conversations that could continue long after the event ends.

The trick is to be intentional about what you do with the opportunity.

1. Know What You Want to Get From the Experience

You don’t need a complicated networking strategy before you attend an event. But it helps to have a clear idea of what would make the experience worthwhile for you.

Maybe you want to understand what employers are currently looking for. Perhaps you’re exploring a new career path, looking for collaborators, hoping to discover opportunities or simply trying to meet more people in your field.

Ask yourself: “What would I be glad I learned, found or started by the time I leave?”

If you already know the speakers, exhibitors or organisations attending, take a little time to look them up too. You don’t need to research everyone, just the people or organisations you genuinely want to understand or connect with.

Going in with some context makes it easier to recognise the conversations worth having when you get there.

2. Look Beyond the People on Stage

It is easy to walk into a room and immediately look for the speakers, recruiters, founders or senior professionals. Speak to them when you have the opportunity. But don’t overlook everyone else.

The person sitting beside you may be working on something interesting. Another attendee may know about an opportunity you haven’t heard of. Someone else may be exploring the same career path or looking for the kind of community you’re looking for. Your peers are part of your network too.

You don’t need a perfect introduction. Ask what brought them there, what they thought about a session, or what they’re currently working on. Let the conversation develop naturally.

Good networking is rarely about having the smartest opening line. It’s usually about being genuinely interested in the person you’re talking to.

3. Don’t Walk Past the Exhibitor Stands

Take the time to speak to the companies, startups and organisations exhibiting, and don’t approach every stand with “Are you hiring?”

Ask what the organisation does, who they serve and what problems they’re trying to solve. If you’re interested in working there, ask about the skills they value and whether there are internships, graduate programmes or volunteering routes in.

You may not leave with an opportunity, and that’s fine, but you might leave with a clearer idea of what a company actually does, where your skills could fit, or what you need to work on before you’re ready for a particular role — and knowing that is worth the conversation on its own.

4. Have Conversations, Not Transactions

Networking can feel uncomfortable when every interaction starts to feel like an exchange: What can this person do for me?

Try approaching it differently. Be curious about people’s work and experiences. Ask follow-up questions when something interests you. Pay attention instead of thinking about what you’re going to say next.

You don’t have to speak to everyone in the room. A handful of conversations where both people are actually engaged is worth more than dozens of contacts you won’t remember afterwards.

5. Write Things Down While They’re Fresh

You meet someone interesting, hear a useful piece of advice, or get introduced to an opportunity worth exploring. You tell yourself you’ll remember it later, and then the day gets busy.

Keep a simple note on your phone or in a notebook. Capture: Who did I meet? What did we talk about? What did I learn? What do I want to follow up on?

This matters most at large events, where names and conversations blur together by the time you get home. A few thoughtful notes are the difference between “I met some interesting people today” and actually doing something with those connections.

6. If Networking Makes You Uncomfortable, Keep It Simple

You don’t have to become the most outgoing person in the room to benefit from networking. If approaching strangers isn’t natural for you, give yourself a smaller goal: instead of trying to meet twenty people, aim for three genuine conversations.

Talk to three people you’d actually like to know. Ask questions. Listen. Learn something from each one.

The goal isn’t to leave with the longest contact list. It’s to leave with a few connections that were actually worth making.

7. Don’t Let Good Conversations End at the Event

If you met someone you’d genuinely like to stay in touch with, follow up while the conversation is still fresh. Connect on LinkedIn or other social network, send a message, or share something relevant to what you discussed.

Instead of simply saying: “Great meeting you at XYZ Conference” , give them something that reminds them of the conversation like: “It was great talking with you about breaking into product roles. I really enjoyed hearing about how research helped you make the transition.”

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. The point is to show you remember the person and the conversation. Not every connection has to lead to a job or collaboration — sometimes you simply meet someone who gives you a new perspective, and that’s a connection worth keeping too.

8. Before You Leave, Turn It Into an Action

Go through your notes and ask yourself: who did I meet that I’d like to stay in touch with? What did I hear that I want to explore further? Did I discover a company, career path or skill I hadn’t considered before?

Then pick one thing to actually do with it — research a career path, update your CV, apply for an opportunity, or send someone a follow-up message.

The Point Is Not Just to Attend

There is nothing wrong with attending an event simply to listen and learn. But if you’re already going to be in the room, you might as well make the most of everything it has to offer.

Talk to people you wouldn’t normally meet. Ask better questions. Explore the organisations around you. Write down what matters. Follow up on conversations worth continuing.

You don’t have to leave with a job offer or a hundred new connections for the event to have been worthwhile. Sometimes, one useful conversation or one idea you actually act on is enough.

Because the real outcome should be that something changed because you attended.

So when you walk into your next event, don’t just find a seat. Work the room.

Your next opportunity, useful insight or meaningful connection may not be on the stage. It may be in the conversation beside you.

For more practical resources on learning, careers, technology and professional growth, follow BrainBranded Network and stay connected with us: BrainBranded Network

How to make your next career or networking event actually worth your time.
